Asset classes, which expanded the most in excess liquidity, are most vulnerable

However, tighter international liquidity will temporary support the US dollar. The dollar started to rally, at the same time, bond yields began to move up in early December 2006 and could benefit in 2007 from a repatriation of funds invested overseas. Equally tighter global liquidity could benefit Japanese asset prices on a relative basis. In 2006, the Japanese stock market was one of the world’s worst performing asset classes suffering both from a weak Yen and declining stock prices. Tighter liquidity coming from declining speculative asset classes could end the Yen carry trade and lead to Japanese asset prices out-performing their foreign counterparts.

Where does judicial activism stop?

A closer look at the judiciary reveals that it certainly is under the pressure from the powerful civil rights groups, the media and the prevailing consensus in favour of privatisation and liberalisation. Yes, the world is changing; globalization is redefining the limits of nation-states. The question we are asking here is, where does judicial activism stop? Who is to de- fine the limits of judicial activism? The 9th schedule was surely an instrument to curtail the activist propensity among the judges on issues of import to the weaker sections of the society.

Notebooks or desktops, er... both!

2007 has been named the 'Year of the Broadband', not without reason. In 2006, between April and September, India bought a total of 2.96 million PCs (desktops and notebooks), registering a growth of 19% over the same period last fiscal. These findings are of the Industry Performance Review for the IT industry, conducted by the Manufacturers’ Association for Information Technology. During this period, Notebook sales increased by 180%, while consumption of desktops was up by 8%. The buoyancy was led by high demand from telecom, banking and financial services, education, retail sectors and BPO/ITenabled services. Moreover, PC sales are expected to touch 6.5 million units in 2006-07.

Retail is really healthy!

Fortis HealthWorld has announced setting up of a chain of retail health-stores comprising

1,000 shops in 400 towns within the next five years, which will operate round-the-clock. The JV between Ranbaxy Laboratories and Fortis Healthcare aims to make the stores one-stop-shops offering health products for the entire family. The stores will have prescription drugs, health supplements, health foods, alternate medicines, home and personal care products and a pathology testsample collection centre.
